We decided to celebrate Spider-Man Brand New Day the only way our family knows how: by starting a fight with a blind-draft Top 10 Marvel movies ranking. We throw all our personal MCU favorites into a hat, pull them at random, and have to place each movie on a shared list with no clue what’s coming next. That means big swings, instant regret, and the kind of arguments only people who’ve rewatched these films way too many times can have.

From Avengers Endgame’s “is it great or just the last hour?” debate to why Guardians of the Galaxy still feels like lightning in a bottle, we land on a final top ten that includes Infinity War, Avengers 2012, Captain America Civil War, Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, and more. The bonus round gets brutal because once a movie moves, it’s locked, and the reactions are exactly as dramatic as that rule sounds.

Then we shift into a spoiler-free Spider-Man Brand New Day review. We talk street-level Spider-Man energy, how Punisher plays off Peter Parker, the excitement of finally getting classic Hulk again, and the choices that work visually even when we disagree on villains, casting, or runtime. We wrap by rating the movie on our Relatively Terrible scale and comparing scores across the family.

Subscribe to Relatively Terrible, share this with your favorite Marvel arguer, and leave a review with your own Top 10 MCU list and your Brand New Day rating.

Spider-Man Hype And The Plan

SPEAKER_03

Spider-Man is in the air literally. The new Spider-Man brand new day is going to be released right before this podcast is coming out. So in honor of that, we are doing another top 10 list. And our family is so agreeable when it comes to these movies. Yeah. That this is just gonna be easy as pie.

SPEAKER_01

Top 10 Marvels.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. We've got all of our top fives here in the hat. So we've got 20 total movies. We're gonna pick one out, we're gonna place it on the list without knowing what is coming. And after that, to end it all, we're gonna do our spoiler free Spider-Man brand new day review. I'm Josh.

SPEAKER_01

I'm Rachel. I'm Calvin.

SPEAKER_03

I'm Jackson. And this is Relatively Terrible. I love you, but you're all terrible. Welcome back to the Relatively Terrible Podcast. We are the Uploads of Fun family, questioning culture with comedy and just enough dysfunction to feel normal.

SPEAKER_01

I'm you think fuck yay!

SPEAKER_03

Especially with this new Spider-Man movie. Oh my god. For the love of Pete, can we let's I'm gonna disown my own child.

Blind Draft Rules And Early Picks

SPEAKER_03

Okay, top 10 Marvel movies. I'm picking first. Here we go.

SPEAKER_02

Guardians, let's get Guardians first. Avengers endgame. Six. No, hold on. I say six. Hold on a second. Because for me personally, the last hour or 40 minutes peaks cinema, the rest of the movies not. Because it's story. We get it, Calvin. We get it. It's not top five every time. No, there's better. We gotta go. There's better.

SPEAKER_03

This needs to be three.

SPEAKER_02

No!

SPEAKER_03

Jax, what do you think? Uh four. I can think of like three other movies that are better. I would agree with five. I can't go six.

SPEAKER_01

I think we put it at five. Five.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, five.

SPEAKER_02

I say we wanted that's the lowest I will go.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, let's go. The highest you will go is five. Highest, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, endgame is five. Here we go.

SPEAKER_03

That's the lowest I'll put endgame.

SPEAKER_01

We got Guardians.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it's this one. That's Guardians of the Galaxy one. Four. Guardians of the Galaxy one. Four. Four. Four? Four. I'll agree with four. Thunder Galaxy One makes me understand why DC chose James Gunn. Yeah. Because that's very good. An absolutely amazing movie. Thunderbolts. Give me Thunderbolts. Give me Thunderbolts. Give me one. Give me one. Uh I can't see it. Avengers 2012. The original Avengers. Two. Three. Two. That's gotta be two. The first Avengers is peak cinema. It's gotta be two. It's got one of Oh, geez. Beauty. I'll go two. I'll go two.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Two.

SPEAKER_02

Two, fine, two. Just get it over with. Two.

SPEAKER_01

I I I I'm good with that. Peak cinema. Hold that for you.

SPEAKER_03

People who don't understand why Avengers is peak cinema. They have issues. I saw that five times in the theater, and we were poor at that point. Come on.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna get the shittiest one. Watch. If we get Thor, that's ten. Okay. Oh my gosh, Kyle. You can't pre-pick the list. Thunderbolts! Yes! Three! Three! Three! Okay. That is top five. That's top five. Okay, I think it's a movie that our family all agree on. And see, this is where I already have a problem. If we get Guardians 3, it's gonna have to go below endgame.

SPEAKER_01

Then in the bonus round, we can switch it up.

SPEAKER_03

It is below endgame.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, hang on. Let's not have that debate yet. It is. We've only we've still got a lot to go here.

SPEAKER_03

What is it? Spider-Man Homecoming. Six. Seven.

SPEAKER_02

Six. Seven.

SPEAKER_01

I would say seven.

SPEAKER_02

Seven is happening. Yeah, there's something higher. There's something higher. There's gonna be something a little higher than Spider-Man.

SPEAKER_01

Would you like, what about like if you put we pick like No Way Home? Is do you think Homecoming is better than No Way Home?

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, see, I disagree on that.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. It was a great reboot of Spider-Man. The story's so good. Great bad guy. It was a good movie. It was a great superhero movie. So I I'm I'm fine with seven. I guess I'll just put it in place of something else later in the bonus round. Okay. Pick it up, Rach.

SPEAKER_01

We got Infinity War. One.

SPEAKER_02

Easily one. One. Alright. Best MCU movie of all time. Here you go, Cal. Take that. Alright. Infinity War one. That was the easiest choice. Yeah. Alright. Alright. Black Panther. Ooh. Um, nine. Damn.

SPEAKER_01

What do you think? Or eight, eight or nine.

SPEAKER_02

The comment section is gonna be. I like Black Panther. I'm saying nine because it's a great movie, but weak, bad guy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Z point nine, weak bad guy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, nothing.

SPEAKER_01

Bad guy is not my favorite. As much as I love uh Black Panther, it's on my favorite.

SPEAKER_02

Boseman was the best casting choice Marvel has ever made. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Michael B. Jordan, not a bad guy. No. And Sinners, I wasn't scared of them. Sorry. Alright, Jackson. What you gonna get?

SPEAKER_02

What you're gonna get? What you're gonna get? Thor Ragnarok!

SPEAKER_01

Six chicks.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we've got nowhere in the top.

SPEAKER_01

That's yeah. Well, you guys will have to make some changes, Ragnarok.

SPEAKER_03

Thor Ragnarok at number six.

SPEAKER_01

You guys love that one.

SPEAKER_03

Such a great movie. That's oh, that's like Guardian's level from Oh. Okay. Captain America the First Avenger. Oh, that's ten.

SPEAKER_02

Ten. Easily ten. I mean, look, even though, honestly, I prefer the Captain America movies over the Iron Man movies. Yeah. Okay, so this is number eight. Here we go. Last one.

SPEAKER_01

Captain America Civil War. Okay. That needs to be higher.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, okay, hold on. We're not gonna read the list because instead we've gotten better at this.

Bonus Round Swaps And Final List

SPEAKER_03

We are gonna do the bonus round first. Here's how it goes. I'm gonna read off the honorable mentions, and then we are going to each be able to make one change. Once something gets changed or moved, it cannot be changed again. Here are the honorable mentions. Four and Guardians of the Galaxy three. Let me go ahead and make my change. What are you doing? What are you doing? I'm gonna take Thunderbolts down to eight.

SPEAKER_04

Oh my god!

SPEAKER_03

And then I'm gonna put Civil War at three.

SPEAKER_04

Holy crap! Ooh, that's stunned. Oh my God! That stunned.

SPEAKER_03

And now you can't touch it. That's the worst thing you've ever done.

SPEAKER_02

Or you're just getting back at me for what I did to freaks and geeks. You're just getting back at me.

SPEAKER_03

It has to be. Civil War deserves to be top three over Thunderbolts. So that's the only one I'm gonna change, though.

SPEAKER_02

Come on, but if I wanted to put Thunderbolts higher up, I'd be. Nope.

SPEAKER_03

You can't move it now once it's gonna be.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, three and eight are done. That's always been the rule. Wait, so once you move it, you can't put it back. That is right. Yeah, no. Oh, what? So here's all it would be then is you guys just changing the same ones.

SPEAKER_01

So what do we think about this?

SPEAKER_03

I can't believe that was such a big deal.

SPEAKER_01

What about swapping Ragnarok and Avengers? So the original Avengers are gonna be at six and Ragnarok number two.

SPEAKER_02

Swap Ragnarok for Endgame. Because Ragnarok's better than Endgame.

SPEAKER_01

Is it Ragnarok better than the First Avengers?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_03

Oh no.

SPEAKER_02

No? No, no. I say switch Ragnarok.

SPEAKER_03

I have a special place in my heart for the First Avengers for two reasons. One, because I I saw it really before the the boys were old enough. Yeah. And it was like, and then they loved it, and we watched it a ton, starting at the Hulk part every time.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna get rid of Captain America in the 10th spot, and I'm gonna put Guardians 3 there.

SPEAKER_02

But see, you know what the problem with that is? Black Panthers over Guardians 3.

SPEAKER_01

We're stuck with it now, bud. That's a problem.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I gotta put Ragnarok at uh five.

SPEAKER_01

So you're swapping Ragnarok with what? Endgame?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I'll just put Thor. Yeah. Oh, Jackson. Bring it home. It's whatever.

SPEAKER_03

It's time. So you're not gonna make a change? Wow. No, we can keep up with the game. Okay. All right, let me let me read it off. Okay. Okay, this is our final Marvel Top Ten. Deal with it. Number 10, Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Number nine, Black Panther. Number eight, Thunderbolts. Seven, Spider-Man Homecoming. Six is Endgame. Five is Thor Ragnarok. Four is Guardians of the Galaxy One. Three is Captain America Civil War. Two is Avengers 2012. And one is Avengers Infinity War. There we go.

SPEAKER_01

That might have been the most painful one we've done so far.

SPEAKER_02

Because honestly, looking at that list now, I would honestly put Homecoming at 10. That should have been number 10. There's just, there's so much better on the list.

Brand New Day Quick Takes

SPEAKER_03

Alright, now is our spoiler-free review of Spider-Man Brand New Day. Let's start off with one sentence for the internet. Jackson, kick us off.

SPEAKER_02

Punisher carried. Damn. If you like a more street level Spider-Man movie with a plot that's pretty predictable, this is the movie for you.

SPEAKER_01

One of the more emotionally resonant Marvel movies. What?

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

No. No. Shut up. Listen. No. Do not listen to these two teenage asshats about what has emotional resonance, okay? They don't even know what that means.

SPEAKER_03

They said they didn't like it because of certain things that I won't say, yet they love Thunderbolts that have those certain things.

SPEAKER_02

Because they handled it better.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, okay, okay. No, they did not.

SPEAKER_01

Let's not do this. Let's not do this. Josh, what's your one sentence?

SPEAKER_03

My one sentence for the internet is again, has DC ever seen a Marvel? Oh my god, I'm so sick of this. They are just Marvel is just killing it all the time. Even if you don't like this, it's better than anything DC has done. Visuals are great. Go see it.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I get it, but you don't have to compare every Marvel movie to DC. They're comic book movies.

SPEAKER_01

You kind of do, man.

SPEAKER_03

Why is DC not getting any better ever? That's why I do it.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Which was better, Spider-Man or Toy Story 5? Oh, what the f that's a genuine question. I thought you were gonna ask me like Spider-Man or Superman.

SPEAKER_03

Spider-Man brand new day is better than Toy Story 5 because you can't compare those two. That's not something you can compare.

SPEAKER_01

So, Jason, without spoilers, what'd you

Punisher, Hulk, And Story Choices

SPEAKER_01

like? What would you change?

SPEAKER_02

I like the relationship between Frank Castle and Spider-Man or Peter Parker. That was good. It was he was the comic relief. Shocking. Shocking. Because if you watch Daredevil, you're like, um murdering a bunch of people.

SPEAKER_01

He's a little hard to handle in the show.

SPEAKER_02

He's hard to handle in the show. However, in this, he's toned down a little bit. He's still he's still a punisher. He's more palatable. Yes. I preferred him in this movie, so they did a good job with that. What I would change. I would have had a real bad guy.

SPEAKER_01

You would have had a more centralized, well-known character bad guy.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Calvin? I guess what I liked was the Hulk. We finally got the Hulk. Not smart Hulk. The Hulk. The Hulk. And the last time we saw him was 2017 in Thor Ragnarok. No, we the last time we saw him was at the beginning of Infinity War. Oh yeah, because he was a fan of the state. But again, still 2018. I thought he was great. CGI on him looked incredible. I guess what I didn't like, I guess was Sadie's character.

SPEAKER_01

It had a lot of the a lot of similar themes as Thunderbolts, which I think Thunderbolts is honestly my personal number one Marvel movie. This was definitely a movie much more based on story. There were definitely there was definitely action and there were fight scenes, but this was this was really about the story. And again, it it made me feel something which typically doesn't happen uh in Marvel movies. I I think in terms of like what would I change, it was a little long. Only seeing it one time, like I can't think of like, oh, this is something I would cut out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I liked right off the bat the visuals, the color palette, uh how it felt, the contrast was is better than most Marvel movies, and I read online somewhere that that was very intentional by the director. Uh, there was nothing CGI or or anything that really took me out of the story, like there was one really egregious thing in Thunderbolts that was like, why did you leave that? I love superhero movies like all the Avengers movies with multiple superheroes in one movie, and everyone already knows that's not a spoiler. You get that with this movie. Yeah. I think the thing I would change. I don't like the choice for Scorpion. I don't like the actor of Michael Mando. Michael Mando, right? As Scorpion. That was a waste. That's the most bullshit take I have ever heard. You but didn't say they were.

SPEAKER_02

Wait, but what were we gonna say? What? What? That was like one of my highlights of the movie. I love seeing him as Scorpion. What?

SPEAKER_03

Because you like him in another show.

SPEAKER_01

But no, I watched it.

SPEAKER_03

That's it. That's it. But he's you didn't see him very much. You didn't see him very much. It was worthless. Yeah. Now I think about it a little bit. They did not utilize that man's acting talent. It was a fine casting choice, but also I hate it for him because he didn't get utilized. I I I'm glad he got a payday,

Casting Debates And Rewrite Ideas

SPEAKER_03

but what's your dumbest hill for this movie?

SPEAKER_02

I would have done Brand New Day right after season three of Born Again, and it led into Brand New Day, and Kingpin is the villain. Yeah. They should have made it to where at the end of Born Again, Kingpin is on top. Daredevil's put in jail by Kingpin. Spider-Man breaks them out and they team up together with Jessica Jones, with maybe Still Punisher. Still Punisher, and they all should have done it together. That would have been a kick-ass movie. Kingpin's not a good enough bad guy for the big screen.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, he is. No, he's not because he's.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, which makes it even more interesting too. But he's strong as hell.

SPEAKER_03

But but all you need is someone who is an enhanced individual and he's done. So that's why you can't do it. But he's also a Spider-Man villain in the comics. I understand, but Spider-Man is enhanced, but not in the way like Captain America is. So, like, all I'm saying is you'd you would have to dumb down the powers of all the superheroes around him to make Kingpin make sense.

SPEAKER_01

Again, this is a dumb pill.

SPEAKER_03

So I think Kingpin would work if he teamed up with someone. Someone who could be the muscle, basically. He can be the mastermind. You know what I'm saying? But once you have an enhanced individual, he's done.

SPEAKER_02

So then what should have happened then is you know how he likes to manipulate people? Right. He should have done that to Sadie's character. Manipulate her. Oh, Sadie's character. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, this company has uh vital information on your sister. I know what you're going through because when I was a boy, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

And then we would have worked together. And then Spider-Man would have been like, wait, Kingpin? Oh, we gotta break Daredevil out of jail!

SPEAKER_03

You know what you jackasses should do? Write a movie.

SPEAKER_02

Get off your fingers and write a movie. And pitch it to Marvel. Give us a hundred mil. Stop blowing smoke, do it. My dumbhill, I guess the hand. I thought the hand being in the movie was absolutely stupid. Wrong. He's wrong. Stupid spoiler. Watch how they act. It was out of character for them. Rach, what's your dumb hill?

SPEAKER_01

I have one, but it's I think it's I think it's all right. I'm gonna say this, but maybe you guys tell me if it's too spoilery. The character of Metzger, while the casting was very good, I like the actor a lot. Some of his previous roles were actually kind of a spoiler. Uh, because he's played a similar type of character before, and it immediately made me suspicious of him, even when he had really not done anything suspicious. So, like the actor, did a great job, but I was I was maybe a little bit spoiled in the story because it was the casting choice.

SPEAKER_03

I think we'll keep that because you have to see severance to understand what she's talking about.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I think that my dumb hill is Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man that there's ever been.

SPEAKER_02

Easily, and see Oh, okay. I'm shocked that you agree with it about it. Thanks, Calvin! Every review I've seen, even videos, they're like, oh, is this better than you know, Spider-Man 1, Spider-Man 2? And I'm just like, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Before we head out, we're gonna give our relatively terrible rating on our relatively terrible scale.

Ratings And Final Thoughts

SPEAKER_03

All right, before we head out, we're gonna rank Spider-Man brand new day on our relatively terrible rating scale, which is relatively great, good, fine, exhausting, questionable, terrible.

SPEAKER_04

Sounds right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, sounds right. Well, the one I always get backwards and somebody pointed out. Questionable and exhausting. Go ahead, Jax.

SPEAKER_02

It was relatively fine. I'll give it a score of 6.5. Yeah, relatively fine with a score of a seven.

SPEAKER_01

I think this was relatively good. 8.5. I liked it.

SPEAKER_03

I thought it was relatively great. I I think it was a nine, but I have to see it again to to like lock that score in. Yeah. Yeah. I don't really there wasn't much that I would change with it.

SPEAKER_01

It had a good maybe maybe I should have said good story, great CG.

SPEAKER_03

It just didn't feel like it didn't feel like the typical superhero movie either, which I loved. So and there was a lot of great surprises. We didn't wait great surprises, no.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. And that is relatively terrible that we cannot have ourselves divided over this movie.
