A top 10 movies of all time list sounds like a fun family activity until you have to agree on one ranking with three other people who will absolutely call you out. We make it harder on purpose: everyone throws five movies into a hat, we only use films all four of us have seen, and we place each pick on the list immediately without knowing what’s coming next. That one rule turns a simple movie ranking into a real-time draft full of bad strategy, strong opinions, and a lot of laughing.

The hat delivers instant curveballs: do you reward pure rewatch value like School of Rock, respect-heavy filmmaking like No Country for Old Men, or pure “this is a classic” energy like Back to the Future? We argue about what makes a movie truly great, where nostalgia helps or hurts, and why some titles feel unbeatable even when someone at the table is not impressed. Along the way we lock in rankings for Terminator 2, Project Hail Mary, The Muppets (2011), E.T., and Toy Story 3, then reveal the full list including our number one pick, Step Brothers.

After the rankings, we do a bonus round twist where each person gets one change, which leads to a few satisfying fixes and a couple of choices that spark new debates. We also share quick personal highlights from the week and end on the kind of off-the-rails family banter you’d expect from Relatively Terrible. If you love movie debates, film list drama, and comedy that feels like a real living room argument, hit play, then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review with your own top 3.

Fighting The Suck Since ©2026 Relatively Terrible

The Challenge And The Rules

SPEAKER_01

How does a super opinionated family from the internet pick a overall top 10 movie list of all time? We're gonna find out today. I'm Josh.

SPEAKER_02

I'm Rachel. I'm Dean Julian.

SPEAKER_01

I'm Jackson. And this is Relatively Terrible. I love you, but you're all terrible. Welcome back to the Relatively Terrible Podcast where we the uploads of fun family question culture with comedy and just enough dysfunction to feel normal. We know, Calvin, you have dysfunction. Dysfunction. Great. Today we are going to pick our top ten movies of all time. We're gonna list them.

SPEAKER_02

Our family top 10 movies.

SPEAKER_01

But not family movies. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Yeah, not family movies. As a family, what is our top 10 list? So one of the rules, or the way we decided to set this up, is that we would all pick five movies, and they had to be movies that all four of us have seen. We put those five movies into a hat. We are each going to pick ten, or we're all gonna pick, and then we're going to decide where in the list of ten it goes.

SPEAKER_01

So we're gonna pick the movie, decide where it goes in the list without knowing what movies are next. Oh boy. Oh boy. So And whatever is left in here, we'll we will tell you what they are as honorable mentions.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Does that sound good? Mm-hmm. This is how Gen Z does a pick from the hat. It's okay, Cal. It's like straw in here.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You have to describe it.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, what's the first movie you got? Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Alright.

First Picks And Instant Arguments

SPEAKER_01

First movie is School of Rock. I vote to put that at seven. I was gonna say seven as well. Seven.

SPEAKER_00

Seven's pretty accurate.

SPEAKER_02

I'll I'll go. I'll go with that. Wow, we actually are fighting about it.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't get death threats. What death threats from my brother. Because if you said ten, I was gonna come at you. No, that is not number ten. Alright.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

If we get the muppets, that is going at me.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, I'll put you hold it. I'm gonna pick. Ooh, no country for old men.

SPEAKER_00

Five. Nine. I'm gonna say three. Nine. I watched that movie uh last Christmas and was left thinking, huh? Good.

SPEAKER_02

That's how So he said, Jackson, you said five.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, dad said three. I think we should go in the middle there. Four. I would say four, so I'm fine with four, but it's not going as low as nine.

SPEAKER_02

No, it can't be nine. But I I understand your your opinion is weighted. So I would also put it at three. So I'm gonna say yours would drag it down to a four. Okay. That's okay. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Go ahead. Okay. I got oh, back to the future. That is three. No. That is three. I would say two. I would say five. That's three. That sh that's not better than no country for old men. What do you say, Rach?

SPEAKER_02

I would probably put that at four or five. Um you're saying two. Yep. You're saying what?

SPEAKER_00

Three.

SPEAKER_02

And you're saying five. I say we do three.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I think that's.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I completely disagree with that. No, it does not go above no country for old men. You're agreeing with that. You think it goes I guess it goes above no country for old men.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's a little bit more of a classic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. You guys are freaking stupid, then. That is stupid. Our first big debate. Do you realize that we took no country for old men from nine up to four? Because so we're we're trying to do this fairly.

SPEAKER_00

This is what I meant! By families cannot do this! If I get the Muppets, I'm putting that at nine. You know you're not. You can't do stuff out of spite! I know, I know.

SPEAKER_01

Muppets is ten.

SPEAKER_00

What? You guys are insane.

SPEAKER_02

It makes the top ten list. Okay, here we go.

SPEAKER_00

Alrighty. What did I what'd you get? Terminator 2. 10. Ooh. No. 10. I think six.

SPEAKER_02

Here's the thing, though.

SPEAKER_01

What's the thing?

SPEAKER_00

It's a good movie. But I'm not like uh it's 10.

SPEAKER_01

I I think it is for me it's 10. It was an afterthought for me. Well, hold on a second.

SPEAKER_02

Knowing Aliens is still in there, knowing Project Hell Mary is still in there, knowing like I feel like there's something just a little bit worse.

SPEAKER_00

So I would say nine. I would play it safe and say nine, because there's gonna be something worse than that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we're gonna end up having to put Toy Story 3 at 1.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah. Can we go?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, what do we say? Let's do nine. Let's do nine, okay. This is the last time I tried you like this.

SPEAKER_00

I'm interested. I swear, if you guys put Muppets at 10, you're freaking insane. Terminator 2? And Terminator 2 is like a 7.5 out of 10. Okay, five.

SPEAKER_01

I pray right now we do not pick Muppets out of here. You're gonna pick Muppets out. I'm kinda hoping we don't either, because it'll just cause Can you hold it so I don't cheat?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, go ahead. Don't mean put it at eight. Shut up. I I could do eight, maybe, but it should be ten.

SPEAKER_00

Oh god, oh god.

Big Swings On The Rankings

SPEAKER_00

Project Hail Mary! Okay. One, five, two, two.

SPEAKER_02

Let's do two. We'll pull it down. We'll do two. Better than back of the future.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. It is better than back of the future.

SPEAKER_02

That's my number one. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Next up, Rich. Oh boy.

SPEAKER_02

The Muppets. Eight!

SPEAKER_03

Eight!

SPEAKER_00

Ten. Eight! I'll go ten.

SPEAKER_02

Eight.

SPEAKER_00

It is better than Terminator 2. It is. It is so much better.

SPEAKER_02

And we're talking, just to clarify, we're talking about the Muppets.

SPEAKER_00

2011. Not the original. Jason Siegel and Amy Adams. Although personally, I really like the original. I like the original.

SPEAKER_02

I do too, but that's not what we're talking about.

SPEAKER_00

Calvin's up. Freck it relg, freck it relalph, freck it rel, freck it rel. Oh god, that's cool.

SPEAKER_03

Toy Story Three One!

SPEAKER_00

No! One!

SPEAKER_03

That is one! I will continue. You are not putting Toy Story 3 at number five! That is criminal!

SPEAKER_00

Suck my fat one. We are not gonna be!

SPEAKER_03

There's no way I'm putting Toy Story 3 at one.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, that's criminal. Put it at five. Five. That's five. Five is the best I can do.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, but Project Hail Mary at two. Man, I'm sorry, Lotto alone destroys Project Hail Mary. No. Yes. Lotto better than Rock.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know what we're gonna end up with. What is number one? It's gonna be crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. So disappointed. Because if we get Rec Rowley, it's gonna be. We should have put Terminator 2. What do you got? Oh, ten. This is a 10. Godzilla King of Monsters. Ten. Why am I getting the G movie? See, that should have been nine. That movie's better than Terminator 2. No. No. No, it's not. Yes, it is. No, it's not. We knew someone. No, it's not.

SPEAKER_02

I look back at Terminator 2 and I'm like, that movie is. If you had chosen Godzilla minus one, I'd be voting to put that number one.

SPEAKER_01

Me too. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But you didn't.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I don't even know.

SPEAKER_01

Godzilla minus one. Calvin hates us right now. He does. Alright, who's next? Uh, you. Me. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

We got two left. Two. Oh my god. The number one spot and number six.

SPEAKER_00

Hold it, hold it. Wait, I thought it was number one and five.

SPEAKER_02

No, one and six. Toy Story Three went to five.

SPEAKER_00

E.T. Six. Six six. Yeah, six.

SPEAKER_02

Six. It's gotta be, right?

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, so this next one is.

SPEAKER_02

Whatever it is, we'll be number one. This is one! We screwed up.

SPEAKER_00

Please, what is it? What is it? What is it?

SPEAKER_02

It's Oh, it's Toy Story Three, Gitch Pick again. Damn! Getch pick again.

SPEAKER_00

Wreck it, Ralph. Wreck it, Ralph. That's gonna be something crappy.

SPEAKER_02

No country for old men again. Okay. Wreck it, Ralph. Oh my god. Please! Let it be alien. Please let it be alien.

SPEAKER_03

It's the brother, brother! Brother! Yes!

SPEAKER_00

Okay. I'm not taking that. That's fine. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Best comedy movie of all time. I will take that. I forgot it was in there. Yes.

The Full Top 10 Reveal

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so here's good reading off our list. Okay. So number 10, we've got Godzilla. Which one is it?

SPEAKER_00

King of the Monsters.

SPEAKER_02

King of the Monsters. Number nine, Terminator. Eight, the Muppets. Seven, School of Rock. Six, E.T. Five, Toy Story 3. Four, No Country for Old Men. Three, Back to the Future. Two, Project Hail Mary. And number one, Step Brothers.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, honorable mentions. Alien. The Dark Knight. Inception. Wreck It Ralph. Return of the Jedi. There we go. So bonus round.

Bonus Round One Change Each

SPEAKER_01

Everyone can make one change. The only thing you can't do is change number one.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, alright. So if that's true, then I'm putting Toy Story 3 at 2.

SPEAKER_01

So and so then you're switching.

SPEAKER_00

So Project Hair Mary will be. Oh, so then if I do that, Terminator 2 will be 10. So it's a win-win. What do you mean?

SPEAKER_02

No, it wouldn't. You're just swapping just a little bit. And Project Hell Mary goes down.

SPEAKER_00

I did not think that's it. Five, two.

SPEAKER_02

What do you want to change, Jackson?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, wait, can I do that?

SPEAKER_02

I don't think so. I can do that. You can remove something. Oh, would you swap something?

SPEAKER_00

You can't swap. You can only remove it and I would replace the Dark Knight with uh remove E T and put the Dark Knight. No, I'm rem- I'm getting rid of Back to the Future and putting the Dark Knight at number one.

SPEAKER_02

Getting rid of Back to the Future?

SPEAKER_00

That's horrible. That's horrible. Give it to me. That's horrible.

SPEAKER_01

Get out of here. So he's getting rid of Back to the Future, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Putting the Dark Knight.

SPEAKER_00

But you wouldn't get rid of Terminator 2? Oh, that's horrible.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's I am getting rid of Terminator 2 and putting Back to the Future. Smart. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

And then what are you doing, Rach? Anything?

SPEAKER_02

I would get rid of Godzilla. And yeah, I would put in Aliens.

SPEAKER_01

Nice.

SPEAKER_02

I would put an Alien over Inception.

SPEAKER_01

So the final list is 10, Alien, 9, Back to the Future, 8, The Muppets, 7, School of Rock, 6, E.T. 5, Project Hail Mary. Like it should be. 4. No country for old men. 3. The Dark Knight. 2. Toy Story 3. And 1, Stepbrothers.

SPEAKER_02

I'm still good with that. I'm still generally good with that.

SPEAKER_01

That's fine. So what was good this week? Oh

Wins This Week And The Wild Exit

SPEAKER_01

my god. I had fun hanging out with Peter Prankster, going to the movies, seeing Toy Story 3 uh 5 again.

SPEAKER_00

For the fourth time.

SPEAKER_01

For the fourth time. And then having burgers and stuff. That was really that was a good time.

SPEAKER_02

I liked on 4th of July watching movies, which we watched Inception.

SPEAKER_00

Very great movie.

SPEAKER_02

And then watched The Thing.

SPEAKER_00

That was also a very good movie. Not very good.

SPEAKER_02

You didn't like The Thing?

SPEAKER_00

No. Why? Oh my god. I didn't know that.

SPEAKER_02

You didn't really care for it?

SPEAKER_01

Wow.

SPEAKER_02

Uh somebody was promoted.

SPEAKER_01

You got a promotion after working at a job for a month. Yeah, that's cool. Great.

SPEAKER_02

The place he hasn't stopped talking about since the beginning of the year.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. But I guess that wasn't that good. No, it was great.

SPEAKER_02

I just try not to toot your own horn. Right. What? Have you never heard that phrase, toot your own horn?

SPEAKER_00

Calvin doesn't have to be.

SPEAKER_02

If you really never heard that phrase.

SPEAKER_00

What do you think toot your own horn means? I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Sing your own praises. Like talk about yourself.

SPEAKER_00

I have never heard a Calvin you don't pay attention.

SPEAKER_02

Jackson, you know that phrase. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Calvin doesn't pay attention. My lord.

SPEAKER_01

Well, they use that phrase a lot in the 70s music, so definitely knows it.

SPEAKER_00

No, they don't.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, did they use it at your retirement club?

SPEAKER_00

I have never heard someone say toot, toot your own phrase. Because you're 14. You're fine. You're fine.

SPEAKER_02

No, it's okay. It's just funny.

SPEAKER_00

I would hear someone say that.

SPEAKER_01

Because you're 72. That's Jackson.

SPEAKER_02

I thought that was just a more common phrase.

SPEAKER_01

You haven't heard anyone say I don't want to sing my own praises.

SPEAKER_02

What would Gen Z say instead of toot my own horn?

SPEAKER_03

Skippity up that ass, yeah! See?

SPEAKER_02

How far?

SPEAKER_00

I was not far off. That was pretty close. No, I was making on my own.

SPEAKER_02

We're supposed to say, and that was relatively terrible.

SPEAKER_01

You know what was good this week for you? You got to put Toy Story 3 at number two on this list. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Should we do this again?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, with everything. We're just gonna cause a ton of as long as we can come down here and not be dicks to each other.

SPEAKER_02

I think we should do, I think we should do local restaurants.

SPEAKER_01

I think we should do favorite toilet papers.

SPEAKER_02

They don't know the difference.

SPEAKER_01

What do you wipes, number one? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No, can't be.

SPEAKER_00

Why?

SPEAKER_02

Because I can't use it. Why can't you use it?

SPEAKER_00

The problem with normal toilet paper, at least in my experience, is that sometimes it will get stuck in your butt. That's a fact! It will get stuck in your butt and your butt hairs, so then you have to personally pink out. Who invented toilet paper? They are stuck. That's my dude vipes. It's wet, so then it doesn't get stuck and gets the poop out.

SPEAKER_01

Why did the guy who invented toilet paper not invent a shaver for the crack of your ass?

SPEAKER_00

Well, and the problem is that you have to use like so much toilet paper at one time, so then it fully covers your hand.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Make sure to wash your middle finger after.

SPEAKER_00

Well, sometimes sometimes you'll accidentally get poop on your hand. That is relatively terrible. What the f-
