The ACT test is brutal, birds in the walls are unsettling, and somehow all roads lead back to one thing: Project Hail Mary. We sit down as a group and give our honest spoiler-free review first, including quick ratings, what surprised us, and why the movie feels like a rare modern sci-fi win that you can actually watch with almost anyone. If you care about a great theater experience, we talk about why the IMAX scale, the sound, and the practical sets make the space visuals feel real instead of plastic.
Then we get into what we loved most: the pacing that “hits the ground running,” the mystery-driven structure that reveals the backstory at the right time, and the way the film makes the science feel essential without turning the story into homework. We also dig into performance, tone, and why the humor works without leaning on profanity or cheap shock. And yes, we spend time on Rocky, because that character is a huge part of the heart of the film.
After a clear spoiler warning, we unpack the biggest reveals, the moral twist that reframes the mission, and the book-to-movie changes that fans will actually want to debate. If you’re deciding between reading Andy Weir’s novel, listening to the audiobook, or seeing the film first, we give you enough context to choose without ruining the fun. Subscribe for more reviews, share this with a sci-fi friend, and leave a rating or review. What did Project Hail Mary score for you out of 10?

What Was Terrible This Week
SPEAKER_03Alright, what was terrible this week?
SPEAKER_05Anything? What was terrible this week?
SPEAKER_00You're not gonna say the ACT test?
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, that was terrible. That was pretty bad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and also driving to the ACT test was the worst thing I've ever experienced in a long time. It was at a hotel over by Target and Chipotle, and you had to get into the hotel right off of like a freeway of five lanes, and then that's the only way you could get back out.
SPEAKER_04It was at a hotel.
SPEAKER_05Yes. And you know what was weird about it? It felt like the shining in there. Like there was even a chandelier and one part, and it was like dimly lit, and it was cold as you walked in, but warm as you left. It was odd, and it was creepy and it was weird. Wow. And the counselor who was directing this whole thing was no, no, there don't say no.
SPEAKER_03Do not say no disrespect.
SPEAKER_05No, I that's not no offense, but what were you gonna say then? It's no surprise that most of those kids in there looked so depressed. They all were dreading this. And she was like, We're gonna have a fun time. And everyone's just like, F you. Like, no one, no one cared. Raise your hand if you're ready for the ACT test. No one raised their hand. And I felt bad for it, but at the same time, I'm nobody wants to take that test. No one wants to take that test.
SPEAKER_03Something bad this week was hearing noises downstairs here in our studio. Sounds like a rat or a squirrel or something's in the wall. It was birds. Come yeah, wait a way to wait a take my thunder. Finally found out today it was birds. Bird flying into the house. Birds. There you go. Anything for you, Rach or Calvin? Oh, I know. Go ahead. He fell asleep.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. Okay, so the new Okay, I forgot about that. So the new Fortnite season came out this week, and I was planning on staying up all night for it, but I accidentally fell asleep and I missed going live at 6 a.m. And I was so mad at myself. I was like, when I woke up, I'm like, huh? What time is it? Oh my god, it's 8 30.
SPEAKER_03I can't believe it. You fell asleep? I almost woke you up too when I got up because I saw you in bed and I was gonna be like, hey, how was the stream? But I was like, I'm just gonna let him sleep.
SPEAKER_00But I figured something went wrong. Because I think I noticed around 6 30 that you were in bed asleep, but I figured you wake me up. I figured something went wrong.
SPEAKER_05And I personally just didn't give a shit.
Project Hail Mary Spoiler-Free Ratings
SPEAKER_03No, because you were also asleep. We do have something worth talking about though today, and that is Project Hail Mary. We're gonna give you our spoiler-free review slash possibly at the end, some spoilers. We saw that movie? We did. We saw it because I'm Josh.
SPEAKER_00I'm Rachel.
SPEAKER_03I'm Calvin. I'm Jackson. And this is relatively terrible. I love you, but you're all terrible. Alright, we're a little late on this. We're gonna admit that, but Project Hail Mary was in put in theaters this past weekend.
SPEAKER_00The 20th.
SPEAKER_03The 20th. So whenever you see this, it's gonna be a couple weeks after that. But this is right now, be warned. This is spoiler-free, but later on we're gonna let you know when there are spoilers of Andy Weir's book, Project Hail Mary, the film adaptation in theaters. We're gonna talk about it. First, let's start with right off the bat rating 10 out of 10.
SPEAKER_00Uh, I'd give it nine out of ten.
Visuals Practical Sets And Rocky
SPEAKER_037.5. I'll give it a nine out of ten. Yep. So I think what I want to talk about is what we loved about this movie. And Jackson, I think you can go ahead and start.
SPEAKER_05Uh visually, I was not expecting this, but uh you told me right off the bat there was no blue screen or green screen involved with this movie at all, which made me very confused in how it was going to be visually. But visually, it's my favorite movie of all time, especially if you see it in IMAX. It's so beautifully done. I love the use of practical uh sets versus just all of it being CGI. Yeah, uh they did a great mix of that, and it looks incredible. Rocky looked amazing.
SPEAKER_03The puppeteer did a great job, and yeah, I really think his voice was actually supposed to be someone else.
SPEAKER_05Was it supposed to be the narrator of the no, that's what all the book fans wanted.
SPEAKER_03They wanted Ray Porter, but as soon as Ryan Gosling and this puppeteer started to work together on set, they came up with such a good chemistry that they ended up using his voice and using a lot of the jokes that happened on set. Because it was pretty funny. And even though it was all there was no blue screen or green screen, there was obviously a lot of there's still a lot of visual effects.
SPEAKER_05Well, yeah, there has to be. This all takes place, most of it at least takes place in space.
SPEAKER_03Yep. But it just looks so good because it's practical. There's either miniatures or they're doing the uh the floating in no gravity, and uh they're doing it in like a sound stage where you can do stuff like that. So it was it was really cool. Calvin?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the CGI and it visually looked really good. The score was also really good, the soundtrack. Yes, uh, the acting was great. It's just this wasn't my type of movie, but it was still very entertaining, and I think anyone can watch this movie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And for a PG 13, is it PG 13? Yeah, I think so.
SPEAKER_00There was hardly any swearing. I don't think there was any.
SPEAKER_05It was also very funny.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was hilarious without using there was no profanity, there was no sex, there was no agenda. There, I mean, you're right, anyone could see this. I can't think of it. Yeah, I can't think of a single person that I wouldn't be willing to watch this movie with.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was that's true. I didn't think about that until after the movie, and then I was like, yeah, super funny, no swearing, didn't feel like any agenda was being pushed. I was like, wow, that was that was pretty cool. What about you, Rich?
SPEAKER_00I agree on the score, but even more than that, there were a couple of times where it was silent. And I I really liked that and sort of the emotion and the impact that that made. Um, I also like the the storytelling. You're flipping back and forth between him and space and then back to figure out how he got there. Um and I like that mode of storytelling where it's not all, I think a lot of movies lately that I've seen, it's just they kind of beginning, middle, end. Yeah, or and they're also like giving you every little detail to where it's like, yeah, I'm not stupid. I understand what's going on. This this I felt like I liked the way the story revealed itself. Um, so that that kept me really engaged, and I I agree, it was also it was very funny. Um, and I'm not a huge Ryan Gosling fan. I've just always felt sort of neutral about him.
SPEAKER_04But his best role is Ken.
SPEAKER_00But I thought in this he was he was really good. I liked him. You're rooting for him, you're rooting for Rocky, you want things to go well. Um, so you're you you get emotionally invested in the characters pretty quickly, I think.
SPEAKER_05And the payoff is worth it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, I like the storytelling because it was similar to the book. And I like movies that try new storytelling tactics like weapons did that. Exactly. I was just about to mention where you go to each character, you hear their story, and then their their stories converge at the end. Now, our audience, people that have been watching this or they watch uploads of fun, they're gonna be shocked by this next statement. But I am the only one here, I am the only one here who listened to the book, and not only one time, but I think it was five times.
SPEAKER_05Every time we go on a road trip, it's that same book. It's awesome or ready player. I feel like I know the narrator by heart.
SPEAKER_03That narrator, oh my gosh. Ray Porter is my favorite narrator ever, and I haven't listened to that many, but he did all the characters, he did Rocky, he took you into the story, and what I loved about the movie is that yes, it was just the Cliff Notes version of the book. They did not stray far from the book at all. And I think there's only one thing that they added that I thought was a good ad. What did they add?
SPEAKER_01Well, we'll save that for the spoiler. Yeah, we'll save that for the spoiler section.
SPEAKER_05I think that that's why I would never read the book because the book, by how you're describing it, is the details in the movie that you know they just said, they go into even more detail about them in the book.
SPEAKER_00It's hard science.
SPEAKER_05That's even a little bit too much for me. 17 hours of a book. That's wow. That's a lot.
SPEAKER_00I thought they did a good job though, with um giving you the science in the movie to where you were explaining. Yes, I understood what was going on. The science made sense, but it wasn't, you know, and I've seen a lot of funny reels on Instagram of people talking about like listening to the audiobook and like hating science in school, and yet they're like all into this hard, you know. So I get it. There's a there is definitely an audience for that, but I thought for the movie, I thought they did a really good job with the science. They didn't brush over it, it was integral to the story, but you weren't bogged down in heavy scientific details.
SPEAKER_03In the book with the heavy scientific details, you're invested because he doesn't know where he is, you don't know where he is.
SPEAKER_00So you're in his head, right? Trying to figure this stuff out.
SPEAKER_03Right, but he knows certain things and he can do math and he can do science and he doesn't know why.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_03So you're listening to him figure out in the beginning of the book, you're listening to him figure out that there's too much gravity and that's why he can't walk. And you're like, Well, he's not stupid. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's it's crazy. So that was one thing I noticed right away. Uh we'll get to that in the spoiler, but let's talk about things we didn't like about the movie, and I'll start.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_03Things that we didn't like. I wish it was longer. I wish it was so much longer. I wish again. So another book I like that turned into a movie, Ready Player One. The movie is good, the book is way better. But they're just so different. Project Hail Mary, they're both really the same, but I could see eventually 10 years, 15 years down the road, they could you could totally do this in a miniseries and still it could still be great. So I wish it was longer. Um I think that's it because there was one part, and I won't talk about that yet, that from the trailer I thought they were really gonna switch, and I was like, oh, they Hollywooded this up, it's gonna be lame. Nope, they did it just like the book. So that's what I would want to change or or didn't like. I want it to be longer.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go the opposite. It could have been a little bit shorter. Now I say that. Um I say that as number one, not a movie person. I'm not a movie person.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, my I don't know if it's like uh ADD or whatever, but like my attention span is much more geared to the 20-minute sitcom. So I'm not a movie person. That being said, though, if you ask me what I would cut from the movie, I would struggle to tell you because I did think that they managed to do a good job with you had a you have all the book people as usual, wanting it to be longer. They want more of the book details in there. But then on the flip side of that, the average movie, I mean, once you hit that two-hour mark, I feel like you start losing people. So they had to find a balance to give you all the details, to give you the story without boring people or losing out on the moviegoers. And I think they did a good job.
SPEAKER_05Dad and I, before we went to go see Project Hill Mary, we watched the movie Ray, the Rayles, the Ray Charles biopic. Who's Ray Chiles? Ray Chiles. And it's over two hours long. Yeah. You felt that though. What? The Ray Charles movie. You felt that how long? I was like, is this ever gonna be over? How long do we need to go into this man's addiction? And then finally, when he gets over, you know, his addiction, spoiler alert, but the movie's been out since 2004. I don't care. Plus his life's been out since 1950, whatever.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, once once he got through the hard times, the last 40 years of his life, they breezed over it in like four minutes. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03It was not a little bit more.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they really didn't focus on anything once he got clean.
SPEAKER_05The payoff was nothing. And then come to figure out the woman that had been with them for the longest, his wife, they divorced. Yeah. But they didn't want to say that, because then that would bring War now knowing the meaning of that song, hey, the row, oh Jack.
SPEAKER_04Don't you come back?
SPEAKER_03Wow, well, that was one of his mistresses that was telling him that. I told Calvin that. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So that's the project tail mary.
SPEAKER_05So again, I I I tail Mary was long without dragging it out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I feel a little bit hypocritical in saying it was a little bit too long because I don't know what I would cut. But I again I'm saying that as somebody who doesn't generally enjoy movies and has a short attention span. That's really my only criticism.
SPEAKER_03You have a short attention span?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03How long does it take you to read a book?
SPEAKER_00I listen, I read in small.
SPEAKER_03Can you just answer the question for the camera?
SPEAKER_00It it depend days.
SPEAKER_03Short attention span here on relatively terrible. God.
SPEAKER_04So, okay. Um I would say it's just not my type of movie. You're not into science. Like science. The whole space thing, it's like, okay, they send people out to space for a mission.
SPEAKER_00Something goes wrong.
SPEAKER_04Something goes wrong, people die, but then it's resolved at the end. Okay.
SPEAKER_00There's lots of movies that follow that formula.
SPEAKER_04But this was a little bit different though.
SPEAKER_05And that's what I liked. The way you just described, Hail Mary is how I feel about your Godzilla movies. But those movies are free. I like those though. You enjoy those movies.
SPEAKER_00I think I think the thing for you, if I had to say why you didn't rank this higher, is this movie is not action-packed. It does have action. It has good pacing, it has good storytelling. But it is not, it is not the pacing of or the story, it's not an action movie. Where you're getting fight scenes, where you're getting dramatic reveals. It's not quite a slow burn. I think it's I think it's quicker than that. But compared to some of the movies that you like that are very fast-paced, very action-packed, it's not that.
SPEAKER_03So if if this would have happened like on Earth, you would have been, you'd have been like, I love this movie. I don't know. Like if it was from the point of view of the Iridians. So it was like opposite, like you would have loved it.
SPEAKER_05That would be an in Ooh, I would watch that movie.
SPEAKER_03That would be an interesting. So what else didn't you like about it though? Um Because you gave it a pretty good rating still. Yeah, you did. 7.5 is pretty good.
SPEAKER_05Because you well, you can respect a movie or a film, but it still not be your cup of tea.
SPEAKER_00It's not really something you are going to re-watch. But you have respect for it. But I think the three of us, I can imagine when the when this is streaming or we're able to buy it, this'll be one I think that'll be pretty pretty regular repeat. Um anyway, I'll save that. Go ahead. What did you not like about it, Jess? What did I not like about it?
SPEAKER_05Hmm. Okay. So maybe I need to re-watch it again, and we're going to re-watch it. But some of the points of time in this movie while they're in space, it's hard to comprehend where exactly they are. You have to kind of infer for yourself, which I liked, but also it was kind of frustrating to understand. Upon reflection, I could kind uh now it's starting to come back to me, I get it. Yeah. But while I was watching it, I got kind of confused.
SPEAKER_03Well, reading the book so many times, it's really just if you think about it this way, it's Earth to the star they're going to. And that's really it. Yeah, so those moments while you're in space, just in the middle of space, you're Yeah, because he can't he can't um he can't really uh move the ship that much. He only knows a little bit how to move it. So he can't really travel anywhere else. Okay. So then it's like there to the star, the star home, and then he Okay. I'm gonna stop there because I don't want to spoil it.
SPEAKER_05Other than that, some of the science was also uh, again, upon reflection, it made more sense. At the end of the movie, the parts that I didn't understand, I had a aha moment that made more sense. Other than that, I really don't have any other complaints about this movie. I did a review on Letterboxd, and the first sentence I said was, if E.T. and Interstellar had a baby, this is that movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you wrote a freaking essay. Shut up. Every review you write on Letterbox is an essay, bro.
SPEAKER_03It is check out Jax the Reviewer on Letterboxd.
SPEAKER_04I mean, bro wrote an uh essay on hoppers. I mean, it was bad, but not, I mean, damn.
SPEAKER_03Jackson is going to be a writer if he's not.
SPEAKER_04He's already a writer.
SPEAKER_03He's already a writer. If he doesn't do it professionally, I'm I'm just gonna poop myself. It's just starting now.
Spoiler Warning And Big Twists
SPEAKER_01Okay, so spoilers. Spoilers, spoil warning.
SPEAKER_03There will be spoilers ahead about Project Hail Mary starting now.
SPEAKER_00Okay, turn it on! So one of the things I enjoyed about this was the mystery element. There were two things in particular for me. It was when he initially wakes up. Um, the movie hits the ground running, which I really enjoyed. But he wakes up in the in the spaceship and he doesn't know who he is, and he doesn't know where he is, why he's there, nothing. And then you find there's a couple of dead people, like people have been dead for quite some time.
SPEAKER_05And the way that he sent those dead people off into space.
SPEAKER_00That was very great. That was very good.
SPEAKER_05And the backstory of seeing those people alive and how he interacted with them, that was even more helpful.
SPEAKER_04I just thought of something. Why doesn't he say it stinks in that room? Because that machine keeps them keeps them from the room.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I was about to say it would stink in there. In the book, okay, and this is what hooked me, when he first wakes up, the m the computer, just like in the in the movie, asks him his name over and over, and he can't get access to anything on the ship until he says his name. And this is where it really hooked me the first time. When he falls off the bed, like he does in the movie, his catheter rips out and it splatters blood across the room, and that line of blood reminds him of the Petroval line, and he's all of a sudden taken back. Well, I'm getting chills, I'm getting chills back to the when he first heard about the Petroval line and the sun.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03And that's when I was like, oh, this is cool. So there's some things that they got rid of, but like I still have the book, I can still go back and listen to it. But this is the movie version, and right away he went up to that hatch in the movie, and I was like, and I was like, oh, he's not supposed to be able to open it yet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think, yeah, so I thought that was all um that mystery element of, you know, but then the other thing, and I think this for me, this was the twist of the movie. I love this. Because the whole time, you know, you you're slowly getting the backstory, but you're kind of wondering, how did he end up on this ship though? Why something happened that he ended up? And when you when you have the big reveal that he said no, he was not going.
SPEAKER_03And that's what I'm glad you brought that up. That's what I thought from the trailer that they had taken out. And I was like, if he just volunteered to go, I'm done.
SPEAKER_00I thought that was incredible. And I loved what is her name? Her character Strat. I thought she was a great character, and then the way they just they drug him and send him up there, they're like, dude, you're gonna do great, you know?
SPEAKER_05Well, and Marcus from uh The Bear was in this movie. I say yes, because I loved him in The Bear. So to see him as a movie.
SPEAKER_03What's his name though? Do we know his name? No.
SPEAKER_05I don't know the lady who plays Strat either, but those two people.
SPEAKER_03Well, if we start reviewing movies, we really gotta know the character because I love Marcus from the Bear. That's what I'm gonna call him. Marcus from the Bear. I don't know who that is.
SPEAKER_00I never watched The Bear, so I don't know. But I did love their whole relationship and how they he was ultimately helping.
SPEAKER_03Oh, when he took him to Home Depot, that was great. They bought a whole bunch of uh building the box.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was great.
SPEAKER_03That was so cool. Now I will say um the other thing that they took out that was really, really funny, but it was one of the relationships between the science officers. Like, like we said, there was no sex or anything in this, but in the book, like Ryland is teaching the science people about astrophage. And the first time he goes to teach him, he's the one guy's like, Oh, thank you for doing this, Dr.
SPEAKER_02Grace. He's like, by the way, I've started to Sexual relationship with uh Ilyukna. Just thought you should know.
SPEAKER_03He's like, okay, uh, don't need to know that. And she shows up and she's like, Oh, hey, how's it going, guys? He's like, Well, I told Ryland that we're having sex. And he's he's like, Oh my god. And then she's like, Oh, that's cool. That's totally fine. And then she's like, you know, there's like 15 minutes after this, you want to like do it in the bathroom? And she, yes, that sounds pleasing to me.
SPEAKER_01And like it. Yeah, I'm glad they cut that. I didn't need to.
SPEAKER_03But there is one moment next time you watch it when those two doctors give each other goo-goo eyes. Just real quick.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Just real quick. But I do like, there's a couple things they added. I liked the moment of Strat and Ryland Grace on the ship by themselves talking. And he says, She's like, I just gotta trust in God for the rest. And he's like, You believe in God? And she's like, It's better than the alternative. Just that one line is like, is it was just so perfect. The other thing was showing Strat receiving the information from Ryland to save the world, and then starting to basic work through the science of how they're gonna fix the sun.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's a very interpretive ending. They're not just like, oh yeah, they got all this work and then they go and save the sun. No, they still have a lot of work to do.
SPEAKER_00But you but you're definitely, you know, but they again, they don't boggy down in a lot of details. You know, there's a lot of really smart people there. They got this far, they have what they need, they're gonna make it happen.
SPEAKER_03But in the book, it's kind of like when Ryland finds Rocky in the movie on the ship because he goes back to save him because he realizes his ship is like shutting down. It goes right to Ryland on Rocky's planet, and they've and they talk, and then Rocky in the book tells him, Hey, we heard from Earth finally, and everything's cool. We can send you back if you want.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03And that's when he goes and teaches the kids. That's my favorite part. I love that.
SPEAKER_00Now you also said that when um Rocky brings Ryland into his ship, that was added. That was not in the book.
SPEAKER_03That was in the book, he wants to go into Rocky's ship so bad, and he just never lets him.
SPEAKER_05Oh, so when he finally eventually does go into Rocky's ship, that never happened in the book? Mm-mm. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00So I thought that was cool.
SPEAKER_05That was pretty cool. I liked that.
SPEAKER_00But what a great character Rocky was.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I put so much personality into that popcorn.
SPEAKER_04There's something with Rocky I don't like that they did. They kept like they killed him and then brought him back. And I'm like, okay. Well, he wasn't dead. Okay, but that's a typical Hollywood thing. Like you think that he's dead and he comes back.
SPEAKER_05But he didn't just arise immediately. It took a couple of days to be able to do it. He never died.
SPEAKER_03And you would like the book because they explain it more. Okay. Basically, when um when his species sleeps, they look dead. And when they're healing, they look dead.
SPEAKER_04And that's why they're I wish Rocky would have explained that to him after He does a little bit about sleeping.
SPEAKER_03That's why they watch each other sleep and he wants to watch Ryland sleep and he thinks it's really weird. That's why. Also, he doesn't want any Rocky doesn't want anyone to watch him eat because it's disgusting. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_05No, he said when he eats, it's beautiful. That's what Rocky said. Yeah, no kidding.
SPEAKER_03In the book, when when he watches him eat for the first time, because he also that's when he poops too, because it goes in the same hole. It's called, I think that the type of animal is called a stomach. Can you imagine if humans or something like that? That would be cool. Interesting.
Book Changes Added Scenes And Rocky Details
SPEAKER_05That would be cool. Cool. Interesting. No. But uh, we need some NECA figures for from this movie. We need some like Funko Pops or something. I don't just want a poster. Yeah. I need some collectibles or something. Yeah. This movie was too good just to say, oh yeah, here's the movie.
SPEAKER_04It would be cool if they came out with uh Rocky Ship.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03Oh yes, that would be sick. Whatever they put out, it's gonna have to be NECA level because of the detail. Yes. Especially if it's the ship. That would be amazing. I would love to get it.
SPEAKER_05Not like a Marvel legend, like an actual good, maybe a little more expensive than normal figure. I don't want to just get a crappy Marvel legend type of, you know, Rocky and Grace.
SPEAKER_00Do we know? Um, do we know what the Rotten Tomatoes are?
SPEAKER_04I mean, we've talked a lot about 98 per audience score.
SPEAKER_00We talked a lot about movies. Well, we're not necessarily that helpful, but I have not seen, I have not seen any negative reviews of this movie. I mean, maybe a couple people have nitpicked here and there, but by and large, everything I've seen has been positive.
SPEAKER_0495% tomato meter and 97% verified hot popcorn meter. And uh Kaboom told me today that opening day, I think it made 36 million.
SPEAKER_03Cool. 8.5 out of 10 on IMDb. Oh, damn. Wow. 77 MetaScore. That is high for a movie.
SPEAKER_00I think, like, just to kind of sum it up, in my opinion, I think this movie has something for everybody. You've got this is science fiction, you've got space, you've got comedy, you've got great visuals, you've got great storytelling, you've got these interpersonal relationships, you've got the end of the world, you've got high stakes, yet there's a lot of levity. You have this great alien character, you have mystery, you have death, what is the meaning of life? Why are we even gonna save people? Um, great acting, no profanity, no sex, no agenda. I'm not really sure what gives it the PG-13 rating, honestly. But I I to me, this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. A new release. Agreed.
SPEAKER_05I had an original idea, even though it is from a book.
SPEAKER_00But and it was adapted well. How many times do we see books that are adapted and and just they just somehow managed to miss the mark?
SPEAKER_03But I remember I was a little upset when I heard Ryan Gossler. But I changed my opinion. Yeah, especially after we got the water.
SPEAKER_05And I've actually watched Especially after we watched that one movie with him.
Reviews Box Office And Why It Works
SPEAKER_03Lars and the Real Girl. Yes. And then I watched another movie with him called uh The Place Beyond the Pines. He is an actor that gets a bad rap because of some of the acting career choices I think that he makes. And because he's so freaking hot. I mean, guys like that, you know, like me too, like we just we get a bad rap and it's it just sucks. Guys like in the Barbie movie, hear me out. Yeah, I mean, but he's so he's so good in this. And yeah, what he said in a I've lot watched a lot of interviews with him, not because I like him or anything like that, Rach. Don't worry, we're good. Okay, 21 years. Um, he said that he dedicated five years of his life to this movie. So he as soon as the book came out and he read it, he signed on right away. It wasn't like they went looking for him. Andy Weir wrote it for him. He that he had him in mind the whole time, and it shows.
SPEAKER_00It shows cool. Yeah, it was well.
SPEAKER_05It's nice to hear that the author who originally wrote it for this specific person got that specific person to play that for it.
SPEAKER_00So often you find out that authors have very little say in the screenplay adaptation and casting and anything, and it seems like Andy Weir was really close to this project. And when I heard that he was happy with the movie, well, he works with a guy named Drew Goodard.
SPEAKER_03And Drew Goodard took The Martian and turned it into a screenplay. And then he took Project Hail Mary and turned it into a screenplay. And there's things that him and Andy would like come to an agreement on, and then there's things that him and Andy would have to go to the studio and fight for. Like they fought for the ending of Project Hail Mary. Yeah, so they wanted to keep it like the book, and I was like, how would you?
SPEAKER_00I yeah, it would have been it would have been very good.
SPEAKER_03It was a little hard to tell though for you guys, like what was going on, right, at first?
SPEAKER_00A little bit, but you realize that they're in like a dome. Yeah. And as they're talking, you're kind of real oh, okay. And and logically also, you have to realize he wasn't getting home to Earth. He had to have gone with Rocky.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so let's try this to wrap this up, and then we'll go into what was good this week. If you had to sell the movie to someone in like a couple sentences, how would you do it? Do you want me to start or do you guys want to start?
SPEAKER_05I'll I'll say it. Go ahead. I think I can wrap it up in two sentences. If E.T. and Interstellar had a baby, it would be this movie. It has the respectable film quality of a Christopher Nolan film and the entertainment value of a Marvel movie.
SPEAKER_03How are you gonna follow that shit? Go ahead and try it, Calvin.
SPEAKER_05What he said space. No, I like this better. Just one word.
SPEAKER_04Lying gospel, but in this one, he's not Ken. That's good.
SPEAKER_02I like that too.
SPEAKER_00I mean, for me, it's what I said earlier. It just has all the great storytelling elements and the adventure and the heartwarming, and it's like I said, and it's got something for everybody. I would really challenge you to find something to be offended about in this movie. And I know people will be able to do that, but very entertaining. Um I loved it. So I I and it again, it's something that you could take your grandmother to see, you could take your five-year-old to see. There's there's gonna be something, something there for everybody, and it is something that I think the rewatchability factor is good is very high. Is very high.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I think that I would say the perfect cinematic experience that is a once-in-a-lifetime thing to be able to go to the theater with your family and experience. I can only equate it to what it would have been like in 1982 to go see E.T.
SPEAKER_00Or like Star Wars when it first came out. For me, it would have been like Star Wars.
SPEAKER_03But it's yes, and it's the first movie in a long time where I'm really like, I could probably watch this a couple times. I could probably like put this on repeat. I could probably throw this on when I'm going to sleep. It would just be like it's so it's so perfect. And I'm still gonna continue to listen to the audiobook on road trips, but perfect cinematic experience. That's a once-in-a-lifetime to be able to watch and experience with your family and friends.
SPEAKER_00My only disappointment is that I wish it had been out when my parents were down here visiting, and we would have been able to see this in the theater with them instead of stupid freaking hoppers. Um out of ten. Yeah, I think my parents would really uh enjoy this. Hoppers.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay. We've given too much screen time to hoppers. What was awesome this week? What was good? What was not terrible this week? I got a new coffee. Oh my god. The Gaggia Cordona Prestige from Italy.
SPEAKER_00Please sponsor us.
Sell The Movie In Two Lines
SPEAKER_03And I oh my oh my god, I was like, oh, good, good.
SPEAKER_04It does the same thing as every other coffee machine.
SPEAKER_03Shut up. I'm gonna make you go see Project Hail Mary again and drink a cup of that coffee while you're watching it.
SPEAKER_06I love you, Calvin.
SPEAKER_03That is my good thing from this week. There was also a lot of other good things. I'm I'm really thankful just for just an upswing with uploads of fun, and just some of the videos we've been creating lately are good too, and like people are getting to see them. And I think people always ask, like, what's the you know, we hear in the live, what's the best video you've ever done, and stuff like that. Time machine video is gonna rank up there for me for a while because that's to the slave. Okay, it's just everyone, all four of us, just losing our minds while Calvin is talking some shit out of his ass, and you're just like, it all made sense, and Jackson is like to tear where his face is like blood.
What Was Good This Week
SPEAKER_05I had no chance to think at that point. I'm like, Well, how do you go to back to the slaves so I can save him? And the way he said that so innocently, he was like, I'm gonna save him.
SPEAKER_03Because I was I was honestly getting upset because I thought that's not funny. I really thought I was gonna get some stupid Gen Z answers from them, and then he's like, back to the slaves, and I'm like, Calvin, that's not funny. He's like, No, no, no, I want to save him.
SPEAKER_05And you guys create this genre called rap. And one guy does it better than you, so you better take care of that. I'm like, so you might want to take care of that.
SPEAKER_02Oh black people, follow me! Hear me black people.
SPEAKER_03Hear me black people. So that was that was really fun, and I'm really, you know, they know it. I'm I'm a baby about all this stuff, and I don't okay, okay, I hear you're sighing. I wasn't sighing. You were agreeing with me. I know that I'm a baby, but I what I don't do is I don't celebrate enough when there are things to celebrate. And I want to do I want to be better about that. So that's what was good for me this week. So good luck.
SPEAKER_04Um yeah, thought so. Oh! Replaying Doom, the Dark Ages. Oh, cool. It's my favorite game. It is what do we peek?
SPEAKER_00Doom as in like Doom. Oh, Doom, okay. Oh, I thought you said Doom. I said Doom.
SPEAKER_05Doomama. Doomama? Oh, that's another.
SPEAKER_03Is it two M's or two N's? What? Spell it. D-O-O-M. N? M. I think I can help with the Doom Doom situation. No. Doom. The Dark Agent. Doom? Doom.
SPEAKER_04There's no N. Doom. Douma? Doom. Doom. Doom.
SPEAKER_06Dooma!
SPEAKER_05The Dark Agent. Uh, I got a cool Jimmy Page collectible from last week at a collectible shop. That was cool. And then I also found a cool Black Sabbath record at Barnes and Noble, which never happens, so that was great. What about you, Rich?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I think I think the highlight of this past week is probably seeing Project Hail Mary. That's it's very rare for me to be. But it's very rare for me to be that impacted by a movie. Like I'm really not.
SPEAKER_04Another thing that was good for me is that I was able to find three gorillas albums.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, can you let your mom finish?
SPEAKER_00No, I I'm good. I'm I'm good. Damn! Rachel.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna feel bad. Why did you stop?
SPEAKER_00No, I uh that was that was the good thing was was seeing the movie.
SPEAKER_04It was really funny. I agree with you that. Helping me out with my essay on Dollywood. I found out something. My teacher sent out an email about that, and over half of the students did not finish that. And that was assigned two weeks before.
SPEAKER_00And that's like 20 20% of the grade.
SPEAKER_03That's gonna shut that shit down. Let's hope they don't, because that would be relatively terrible.
SPEAKER_00You can't end it like that. Why? That was perfection! But that doesn't make any sense to anybody.
Closing Bits And Pop Culture Tangents
SPEAKER_05We can end it on something even more terrible. Well, okay. Don't tell that you're gonna end it. Just start talking. Dune part three is coming out.
SPEAKER_06Oh, they're making him in it.
SPEAKER_04Oh, what's his name? He's from the Twilight movies. Robert Pattinson.
SPEAKER_00Isn't Dune now?
SPEAKER_04Yep. Oh my god. Let me see. I think Tom Holland is ha is going through shit right now. Seeing Zendaya with Timothy Chalomet. And then Robert Pattinson. Timothy Chalomet? Yeah. And then in the new Spider-Man trailer, hanging out with another dude.
SPEAKER_03You know what I want to know, Cal? How can you say Timothy Chalomet right, but you can't say genre? That's a good question. And that is relatively terrible.
SPEAKER_05You also can't put your socks on right, dude. I already said relatively terrible. Genre. Genre.
SPEAKER_00He said he spells it. Like if you were gonna spell it the way he says it, it's J O N R N E.
SPEAKER_03It sounds like She-Ra's brother. Genre. Genre. Genre and She-Ra. Cutra.
